New SIM card rules effective July 1: From July 1, 2024, new rules for getting SIM cards are being implemented in India, which are bringing some important changes for the users.
These rules have been made as per the decision taken by the Telecom Authority (TRAI) to further strengthen SIM card security. According to the new rules, now if a user’s SIM card is stolen or lost, it may take some time for him to get a new SIM card.
You will have to wait for 7 days
Earlier, if a user lost or damaged his SIM card, he could immediately transfer his number to another SIM card. But now according to the new rules, users may have to wait for up to 7 days if they face this problem. Its purpose is to prevent SIM swapping fraud and strengthen security.
These rules will apply to situations when a user’s SIM card is stolen or lost, such as the SIM card getting damaged. Earlier, if the SIM card was stolen, the user would port his number to another SIM card without any delay.
After that, users used to get such facility that they could switch and they would get a new SIM card without any delay. But now this rule has started a period of waiting for them. If a user’s SIM card is stolen, then it may take some time for him to port his number to another SIM card.
It is important to stop SIM swapping fraud
Apart from this, this rule is also necessary to prevent SIM swapping fraud in the telecom industry. In many cases, after people’s SIM cards are stolen, their numbers are activated on another SIM card without permission, which also increases the possibility of fraud with them.
Therefore, as per the new rules, consumers have to be patient to avoid SIM card loss and they should be ready to wait for up to 7 days after temporarily losing their SIM card. This new rule will help in strengthening SIM card security as well as increasing the security of the users.
